If you’re reading this, you’re probably like me: you’ve started some kind of business and have dug DEEP on the internet to find out how to optimize your website for search engines so that people can find you. One of the biggest takeaways you’ve learned is that keywords matter. But if you’ve ever heard that stuffing your content, alt text, or meta descriptions with keywords will help you rank higher on Google, think again. Keyword stuffing is outdated, ineffective, and can actually hurt both your SEO and website accessibility.

What Is Keyword Stuffing?
Keyword stuffing is when you overuse keywords in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings. This can happen in website content (paragraphs filled with unnatural, repetitive keywords), meta descriptions (overloading them with keywords instead of making them readable), and alt text (cramming keywords instead of describing images properly)
Example of Keyword Stuffing in Website Content
❌ Bad: “Squarespace web designer for small businesses. I am a Squarespace web designer specializing in Squarespace web design for small businesses needing Squarespace websites.”
✅ Better: “I design custom Squarespace websites that help small business owners stand out and attract more clients.”
Notice how the second version still includes keywords but sounds natural and engaging? That’s the goal!
Why Keyword Stuffing Hurts SEO
Google Penalizes Keyword Stuffing
Search engines want to provide users with the best, most relevant content. If your page is stuffed with awkward keyword phrases, Google will flag it as low-quality and may push it down in rankings
It creates a bad user experience
Nobody wants to read robotic, repetitive content! If visitors land on your site and find hard-to-read, keyword-stuffed text, they’ll leave quickly—which increases your bounce rate and signals to Google that your site isn’t useful.
It Hurts Your Credibility
Keyword stuffing doesn’t build trust with your community. Instead of coming across as a knowledgeable expert, you risk looking like you’re trying to game the system. Good SEO is about providing value to your website visitors and potential customers, not tricking search engines.
Keyword Stuffing is Bad for Accessibility
Now THIS is my biggest problem with keyword stuffing. Many people forget that SEO and accessibility go hand in hand. Keyword stuffing in alt text and meta descriptions doesn’t just hurt SEO—it also makes your website harder to navigate for visually impaired users. Let’s not forget the main purpose of alt text - to help people using screen readers understand what is going on on your webpage!
❌ Bad Alt Text (Keyword Stuffed): “Squarespace web design Squarespace website best web designer small business website Squarespace Squarespace Squarespace.”
✅ Good Alt Text (Descriptive & Useful): “A modern, mobile-friendly Squarespace website designed for a small business owner.”
Write alt text that clearly describes the image for your website visitors who need it, not just for SEO.
The Right Way to Use Keywords for SEO
So, if keyword stuffing is bad, how should you use keywords correctly? Here are a few best practices:
Write for humans first
Your content should always be easy to read and most importantly, VALUABLE to your audience! This is how you build relationships with your audience, establish trust, and keep them coming back to your website. THAT is what let's Google know that your website is relevant.
Use keywords naturally
Include them in your webpage's headings, URLs, alt text, and body text without overloading. Trust me, this is more than enough!
Optimize alt text and meta descriptions
Make them descriptive and helpful, not stuffed with random words.
Mix it up
Use variations of your keywords to avoid sounding repetitive.(This is where your keyword research comes into play!)
Keyword stuffing doesn’t work anymore—and it can actually harm your SEO and website accessibility. Instead of forcing as many keywords as possible into your content, focus on writing naturally, providing value, and optimizing your site in a way that helps both users and search engines.
